It’s the obvious question: if I get NZFAP+, what’s it worth in dollars?

Straight answer: on our clients’ kill sheets, certification is worth 20c per kilo of carcass weight — 10c for base NZFAP, another 10c for NZFAP+. On a 2,500 stock-unit sheep and beef farm killing roughly 50,000 kg a year, that’s about $10,000 a year.

Already NZFAP certified? Most farms supplying the big processors are, and you’re banking that first 10c now. The extra 10c for NZFAP+ is still about $5,000 a year — and the plan is a one-off job. The premium isn’t.

The caveats, because there are real ones

  • No processor publishes these premiums on a rate card. They’re set company by company and move with season, contract and stock spec. Silver Fern Farms ties its Nature Positive payment to NZFAP+; ANZCO pays a premium on contracted, in-spec lamb, prime steer/heifer and bull. Others reward certification through access to their premium programmes.
  • The premium’s paid on what you kill. Sell most of your lambs store and the maths changes — run your own numbers before you decide.
  • So what certification is worth on your schedule depends on who you kill with. Ask your livestock rep — or ring us and we’ll tell you in ten minutes, no charge, and we’ll tell you if it’s not worth it.

What doesn’t change by processor

  • Audit cost. Supply a processor or wool company that’s an NZFAI member and they typically cover your audit cost — so certification can cost you close to nothing out of pocket.
  • One plan, not three. An NZFAP+ Farm Environment Plan does most of the heavy lifting for a Freshwater Farm Plan and your processor’s requirements. Build it once.
  • Market access. NZFAP underpins the Taste Pure Nature origin brand — B+LNZ research put a potential ~20% price premium on it in the US market. That sits at the brand level, not on your kill sheet, but it’s the access your certification protects.

Bottom line

The premium is real — we’ve seen it on the kill sheets — but it’s processor-specific, not guaranteed. Budget on the conservative case and treat anything above it as upside. And if the maths doesn’t stack up for your system, we’ll tell you that too.
